For many people, Festival of Trees has become a holiday tradition. Scheduled over six days during the Thanksgiving week, Festival attracts approximately 18,000 people every year. Proceeds from its fourteen years of operation have exceeded all expectations, netting over $6,272,000 to support our community’s health. We hope you will join us this year.

So you think you have what it takes to be a royal SLUG? Membership does have it’s privileges –but are you prepared to slime your way to the top? This year the SLUG Queen Competition and Coronation will kick off a wild Eugene Weekend of Celebration. All SLUG Queen competitors MUST submit a competition application to Kim Stills at the Saturday Market Office, 76 West Broadway, Eugene. Get yours in early! Public competition begins: TBA

OFFICIAL DUTIES OF THE SLUG QUEEN

Competitors must be able and willing to:

-Appear in the Eugene Celebration Parade

-Tour the Eugene Celebration and greet the public at the Eugene Celebration Festivities

-Make an appearence at the Mayor’s Art show and the Salon de Rufuse 

-Host the Lane County Arts Council’s October First Friday Art Walk

-Deliver the Benediction at the Annual JELLO Art Show,  At Maude Kerns Gallery

-Throw a charity ball/event for the non profit of your choice

-Make an appearance at the Country Fair 2010

-Be available for the  Coronation of the next ‘raining’ SLUG Queen

-Accept additional event appearances at your discretion

Thanks to the District (Oak and 13th) and the talents of DJ KaatSkratch , the 2009 SLIME BALL was a huge success. The SLUG Queen danced and delivered door prizes while raising money for  Birth To Three.

Queen Slugtoinette was proud to welcome Oregon Native and famed film director James Ivory to the Slime Ball where they enjoyed pastries and cake by Sweet Life, the new french Patisserie ‘Caramel’, and cupcakes made by the queen herself from a recipe by her friend Amy Sedaris.

Birth To Three is a private non-profit organization that provides parenting education and support to families with young children. They bring parents of young children together to:

• share parenting experiences,
• increase their knowledge of early childhood development,
• learn about community resources, and
• create support networks among themselves.

The Marie Slugtoinette and all of the SLUG Queens are proud to support Birth to Three.

The SLUG QUEENS have created their own SLUG TRAIL to let tourist and locals alike know just where to find the local royal jewels! Slug Queens move a bit faster than your average slug. Here’s the secret: Legendary NW coffee starts right here in Eugene!  Wandering Goat Organic Coffee (541 520-9439) created a Royal Slug Queen Coffee Blend to honor the queens, and they roast their own coffee right on the premises.

The SLUG Queens also give their royal stamp of approval to Hideaway Bakery for a lazy morning with the dog and paper, The District where you can compare Portland’s famous ‘Stumptown’ coffee to Eugene’s own ‘Wandering Goat’,  Mid Town Market Cafe perfect spot to meet over a latte, and Supreme Bean Coffee Company a bright cheery cafe carrying baked goods from Sweet Life and Kakua Chocolates!

Holy Donuts vegan, gluten-free and still delicious. For about a year now, Karen Nunley has owned and run Holy Donuts, which produces doughnuts and pastries free of pesky ingredients like dairy, gluten, trans fats and cholesterol.

The Rabbit Located in the Woodfield Station business complex at 29th and Willamette. The menu explicitly states “No substitutions” and “No ketchup.” While Musgrave acknowledges that some people might have trouble with this concept, she quickly points to its benefits: keeping prices affordable by wasting less food (substitutions = less efficiency, y’all), and putting more control in the hands of chef Gabriel Gil, who recently left Red Agave to commit full-time to The Rabbit.

La Perla produces pizza in the style traditional to Naples, where pizza originated in the 1600s. It’s a craft closely governed by the Verace Pizza Napoletana (“verace” is Neapolitan slang for authentic). The VPN has codified every ingredient that

Come to the 2009 Eugene Festival of Trees to see or even bid on the award winning Slug Queen Tree. The Slug Queen Tree was awarded ‘Most Creative’ and ‘Most Original’ in the 7ft tree category and is entered in the silent auction to add whimsy and sparkle to the home of the highest bidder. The tree is decorated with hand sewn stuffed slugs and golden crowns, handblown glass Slug Queen ornaments from Imagine Gallery glassworks, and ornament individually created by many of the old queens themselves. Wrapped in hot pink feather boas and irridicent ’slime’accented, and with glittery stage cat glasses, the tree is topped with a large golden soft crown and pink star. Of course we added some pepperment bark, chocolate truffles and snowman cookies in the gift boxes under the tree as our ‘bribe’ to the judges and bidders! Come check out our first entry ever.

The Register Guard’s piece on the 2009 Slug Queen Competition and Coronation covers the highlights beautifully, but they do say that Queen Anislugsia has big shoes to fill to keep up with (now) Old Queen Marie Slugtoinette. Did they get a good look at those size 13, slime green, pointed toe pumps? She was the envy of every old queen at the first sight of those very full shoes.
