Public Garden Art Fundraiser

Everyone loves slugs.
Ellen Tykeson’s popular “Slugfest”
water fountain at the Children Garden
Oregon Gardens, Silverton, OR.

Now Eugene can honor their beloved
SLUG Queen with this proposed bronze
Slug Queen sculpture. She will stand as
a monument to our unique nature.
The Proposal
The sculptor, Jeffrey Weitzel is a talented local sculptor with experience in public/government projects (he designed and cast the bronze plaques on the new Downtown Eugene Fire Station on Willamette Street). Mr. Weitzel has begun work by creating some preliminary sketches that will give you an idea of the Slug Queen’s design. She is a work in progress focusing on anthropomorphizing the Slug Queen in such a way that is fun, interesting and attractive. The finished sculpture would be about 30” long x 18” high with a bronze finish that is intended to patina over time. She would need little, if any, maintenance.

Where will she reside?
The garden of choice is the
Hendrick’s Hill Rhododendron
Garden.. The concept of the
Slug Queen Sculpture residing
here is unanimously supported
by the Friends of Hendrick’s Park
who jointly care for the park
along with the City of Eugene.
They have suggested the sculpture
be bolted to a concrete pedestal
slab (12”-24” high) for security
reasons, with a slug friendly garden
bed around the base from which
the Slug Queen would rise. The
natural magical quality of the
gardens lend themselves perfectly
to the mythology of the Royal Gastropod. Here “Her Royal Highness” can serve as a whimsical reminder of the unique and creative city that we share.
The Slug Queen sculpture will undoubtedly become a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, once “discovered”.
